Prioritization

This is a new feature available after the update 23.2.0



What is Prioritization?

Prioritization is a function that can be used to change the tasks' priority by dragging and dropping them right on the Planningboard.


When do you enable this function?

Whenever you want to change the card's priority from the Planningboard.


How to use it?

Toggle the Prioritize button so it becomes red and then drag and drop cards according to the needed priority changes.

Please note that you can Prioritize cards only sorted by priority and within one cell only. 

How do priority calculations work?

- prioritized card gets the average value of 2 cards around it: x = (y+z)/2;

- by moving the card to the highest priority it gets +10 points from the previous highest value;



How to see the changes?

Click on the Refresh button.


Detailed example case:

Let's take a look at our Planningboard:  

The cards are already sorted by priority in the Planningboard parameters and the tasks are presented from the highest to the lowest priorities.

Note! It is needed to sort cards by priority in the "Sort by" parameter beforehand. 


But what you can do now is actually prioritize tasks right on the Planningboard. 

To do so, you need to toggle the "Prioritize" button so it becomes red. 


When the "Prioritize" button is toggled you can see the prioritization value in the brackets near the previously set priority.

And now you are able to drag and drop the cards changing their prioritization.


Priority calculations:

Let's take a closer look at the selected cards and check how it works:


- magine that we want to prioritize task PB-122, so it stays between PB-138 and PB-136; so we just drag and drop the card to the desired position.

As you can see that not only the position of the card has changed, but also the prioritization value.


How does it calculate the new value? - It takes the values of the cards around it (61 and 55 in our case), and counts the average value between them: (61+55)/2=58;


Now if we move the same item to the top, it will add 10 points to the previously highest value. As in our case, the highest value was 61, so +10 it becomes 71 and the previously highest task saves its value.


As you can see the fact that we moved PB-138 didn't change its value, and if we try now to move this card to the bottom, first - we would not succeed, because you cannot move the task to the lowest priority position and second - it would change its value to the average - 63.


Refresh the page to see the changes:

If we exit prioritization mode now, we will see no changes in the priority field, because what we should do is - Refresh the data on the page.

After that we'll see the new priority value on the cards;



Moving cards from different cells while Prioritization:

 It is important to prioritize cards only within one cell; 

You'll get the message that it is impossible to move the card from another column during Prioritization. The same goes for adding cards from the unplanned section.


So if you need to add a card, first add it as usual and only then enable Prioritization to change the priority.



Prioritize cards with the same priority:

If there are only 2 cards it always adds +10 points; this cycle can be done multiple times, but the difference will always be 10 points. 


In case there are 3 cards the highest card gets +10 points, and the card that now stays in the middle position gets the average value between 2 other cards.

As you can see I moved PB-205 item and it changed the priority of the upper card as well. 


Conclusion:

- the priority changes to the average value of 2 nearest tasks;

- when dragging the card to the highest position it gets +10 points than the card that was in the highest position before this;

- you cannot move cards to the lowest position;

- you cannot drag cards from other cells/unplanned section when Prioritization is enabled;

- refresh data on the page to see changes.
