In some cases, certain work item types don’t need to be scheduled explicitly. Instead, their schedule should be automatically derived from their child items.
For example, if you want the schedule for a “Portfolio Epic” to be calculated based on its children (such as Capabilities, Features, etc.), you can configure it so that the Portfolio Epic inherits the schedule from those underlying items.
This approach ensures a more accurate and dynamic timeline that reflects the actual progress and dependencies of the work breakdown.

Configuration
To properly configure the Gantt chart, follow these steps:
Enable Parent–Child Relationships
Ensure the Gantt chart displays parent–child links correctly by using the appropriate link role(s)
For the “Portfolio Epic” work item type, set the Gantt Type to “Portfolio”.
Set the Hierarchy Depth (optional)
You can configure how many levels of child items should be loaded and displayed.
Choose a Gantt Presentation Mode
Select the desired Gantt Presentation Mode to best fit your visual and functional needs
